Mouthguards

We strongly recommend that sports-people wear custom-fitted mouthguards. Sporting accidents are one of the most common causes of dental injury. Every year, thousands of people (including children) are treated for dental injuries like broken teeth that could have been avoided or minimized by wearing a protective, custom-fitted mouthguard.

Unfortunately, the “boil-and-bite” mouthguards you can buy in stores generally don't fit well enough to offer proper protection. They are often knocked out of the mouth by the impact. We see many patients with dental injuries, despite wearing a “boil-and-bite” mouthguard at the time.

Here are 5 Good Reasons to wear a custom-fitted mouthguard:

  1. It cushions your teeth against impact, to help prevent teeth being broken or knocked out.
  2. It protects against soft tissue injury (such as biting your tongue, your lips, or the inside of your mouth).
  3. It protects against jaw joint injuries (like a dislocated jaw or torn ligaments).
  4. It helps prevent neck and jaw injuries (like a broken jaw or bruised bone).
  5. It may help reduce concussion by absorbing some of the impact.

Damaged or knocked-out teeth, broken jaws and cut lips can be painful and disfiguring. The cost of treatment for an injured jaw or teeth would be much more expensive than the cost of a custom-fitted mouthguard.

We offer different thicknesses of mouthguard to match the intensity of the sport and age of the patient.
